About

Why Murfy?

“Murphy's Law doesn't mean something bad will happen. It means anything that can happen will happen.”

Everyone knows Murphy's Law: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” Most people read it as a warning, even a bad omen.

We read it differently. The law doesn't say something bad will happen; it says anything that can happen will happen. The good and the bad. It is not a fear, it is a checklist.

Where does the law come from?

It is named after Edward A. Murphy, an engineer who worked on safety experiments in the United States in the late 1940s. Since then, engineers have used it not as a complaint but as a design rule: if something can be done wrong, someday someone will do it wrong. So design it so that it cannot be done wrong.

All of Murfy's work rests on that sentence. When we start an app, the first question we ask is not “what is it for?” but “what can go wrong?” The internet drops, phones get old, passwords get forgotten, a friend's phone doesn't have the app. All of it will happen. We prepare for all of it from the start.

We took our name from this law and spelled it our own way: not Murphy, but Murfy. A name as short and memorable as the law itself, and one that makes you smile a little.

Our principle

We think of the worst case first

If anything that can happen will happen, the worst will happen too. We put that moment at the start of the design.

No internet.

Zikret works offline. The Quran, prayers and prayer times stay on your phone.

Your friend doesn't have the app.

They join Hatmet from their browser with a link. No install, no sign-up.

You forgot your password.

There is no password to forget. Our apps don't ask for an account.

You use an iPhone and the app isn't there yet.

Until Hatmet's iPhone version arrives, you join a khatm from your browser.

Ready for anything that can happen.

Process

How we work

Every app goes through the same four steps.

  1. We pick a single problem

Every app solves one thing. Zikret, prayer and dhikr; Hatmet, the shared khatm.

  2. We write down the worst moment

What happens if there is no internet, the phone is old, or the user sees the app for the first time? That is where the design starts.

  3. We cut the excess

Sign-up screens, needless permissions, crowded menus. Anything that doesn't help goes.

  4. We listen and grow

We read every message. The apps are updated with what their users tell us.

Who we are

Small, independent, careful

Murfy is an independent studio founded by Uğur Yıldız. What we build is decided by the people who use it and by our own principles.

We design every app to do one thing well and leave out everything unnecessary. We don't ask for an account, we leave your data with you, and we keep core features free for everyone.

Zikret and Hatmet are live today. New apps, our first games and our shop are on the way.
